ST. PAUL'S CHURCH MELAKA

ST. PAUL'S CHURCH MELAKA

While enjoying my shoreleave last weekends, I decided to visit the oldest church in Southeast asia. It is located at St.Paul hill. I went inside and was amazed about what I saw. In this blog I would like to share my experience inside the oldest church in southeast Asia.

Prior entering the church you will see a statue of priest without a right hand. According to my research, It was built with a complete set of hands but when a tree fell it damaged the arm of the statue. It is the statue of St. Francis Xavier.

Those are the tombstones. I'm not sure what were written o it. According to local people when the Dutch came they built the Christ Church and made this church as their Burial site and graveyard. That's the reason why we can found a tombstone here with a Dutch script written on it.

What exist here are the unique blend of history and culture, a chapel built by a Portuguese captain, being handed to the Society of Jesus and later renamed by the Dutch. All these become what we see today. For me as a Christian, I'm lucky enough to visit one of the first church in Southeast Asia.
