Tough Man at Sea by AMMAR ARIF

Hi there! It’s me AMMAR ARIF, it’s been awhile since the last time we talk about the shipping industry. How are you? I really hope that all of you are in good condition and having a great Ramadan journey. I think it’s never too late for to wish all of you Ramadan Mubarak! Please fast well and don’t skip it at all guys. We can do this. For those who don’t have the experience in fasting, I challenge you to try it at least one day. It would be a good experience for you to wake up for Sahoor and continue your day as usual and break the fast at Maghrib.  Scientifically, it is good for your digestive system and also will teach you to be grateful with what you have today. And as for today, I’m not going to tell you about fasting month, I am going to tell you the story about the bad experience I’ve encountered onboard. I believed each and every one of us have encountered so many experience during the shipboard training period. It might be a good one or a bad one. Depends on how you describe it and as for me the fact that I have to wait and delay in time is the worse experience. All of us are supposed to enter our semester 5 and 6 as an early comer. Im not trying to condemn my company, it is the one that responsible to handle us, the 30 cadets sponsored by the company is what matter. The one that responsible to set up our shipboard training is doing her work in such a mess way. At one point she called all the cadet on board of the same vessel because she don’t know which ship we are on and for how long we have been on the ship. She also like don’t even know about our previous vessel. To make it simple, she’s not even doing her job correctly and if anything happen to the cadet or when we ask her about our status, she will just throw away all the fire to us. I still remember during Ramadan month last two years, I involved in the reactivation of the vessel. We have to reactivate our vessel which been at the lay-up site for a year. Can you imagine how hard for us to reactivate the vessel. The company keep on pushing us to the limit. And we do the best that we can to follow the schedule. At one point the vessel is still not fully reactivate and it is time time to celebrate Hari Raya. The company book the flight ticket to the officers and engineers that involved in the operation and will continue after the Raya break. And how about the cadet? Without a proper documentation without anything we were asked to stay and become the stowaway on board of the company’s vessel without any seatime collected. We deserved to go back home or at least allow us to stay in a hotel not being that cheap and ask us to become a stowaway.  After more than a month of reactivation. The vessel finally can be accommodate by us. There is one fine day that the public toilet in our vessel is clogged and suddenly all the sewage water rise and covering the floor. Suddenly everyone when missing and no one would like to take the responsibility to clean up the mess. Guess what? I and another one deck cadet have to clean it up. And everyone else just suddenly missing in action. We have to mop the floor and collect all the sewage water throw it out from the vessel. About 4-5 drums of it actually. And yeah theres always a good in a bad thing. Each and every morning i wake up to proceed with my duty at 6am. and my day will start with a cup of coffee at the bridge while enjoying the sun to rise. Believe me it is a wonderful experience you will miss. not to forgotten the sunset view always calm me down after such a tough day. another good experience that will never forget is that time when my vessel is in the middle of the ocean. I can see how small i am in this mighty world. and this will always make me feel grateful and humble to the god all mighty. honestly I will never erase those thing from my head.

late night duty.
